Bolivar is one of those places where you can expect to get a smile and hear a hello when you stroll down the street. This town has that Midwestern hospitality around every corner. It is a small town, but it does have a full service hospital and a great school system along with the highest community support. Bolivar has about 9,000 residents and is just 24 miles away from Springfield, Missouri. Visitors can access Stockton Lake and Lake Pomme de Terre within 15 minutes.

Bolivar is named after a Tennessee town that took its name from a South American general, Simon Bolivar. Many of the area settlers came from Tennessee and saw this name to be fitting to the area. The name was meant to symbolize freedom and new beginnings and the town has two bronze statues of the general, which were given to the city by the Venezuelan government.

Bolivar visitors often like to spend time at Stockton Lake. This lake offers beautiful scenery with over 300 miles of unspoiled shorelines and clean, clear water on 25,000 acres. The lake is considered to be one of the most pristine lakes in the area with beautiful scenery and relaxing activities. Wildlife is abundant on the shore, depending on when you visit. You can see deer, turkeys and geese along the water's edge and sometimes even bald eagles are spotted. This lake is perfect for families, as there is something for everyone. Visitors can water ski, wake board, fish, sail, canoe and participate in any number of water activities. Stockton Lake has protected coves that make great picnic areas.

Lake Pomme de Terre is another beautiful, natural area just 15 minutes from Bolivar. This lake is called the 'apple of the earth' and it serves as an idyllic getaway. There are a variety of activities at the lake, which is located in a peaceful and rural area. Visitors can fish, hunt, participate in water sports, hike and enjoy many other activities. This tranquil area is known for its natural environment and it is a great place for families to get away from everyday life and spend quality time together.

Since Springfield, Missouri is just half an hour away, many visitors enjoy spending time in the larger area. Springfield is a big city with a special, hometown hospitality. It is a unique place with fun attractions that are perfect for families that never want to experience a dull moment.

Families often enjoy visiting the Commercial Street Historic District in the downtown portion of Springfield. You can experience an eclectic vibe including artistry, entertainment and shopping. There are local coffee shops, the country's largest footbridge, a seasonal farmer's market, art galleries, flea markets and many other attractions in this district. This historic area is a one of a kind destination with affordable gourmet restaurants, the oldest tavern in the city, a 52-year-old pizzeria and a chocolate factory that imports its own beans and then roasts them on site. Springfield's Historic District is six blocks of turn of the century architecture with something new and exciting around every bend.
